Apollo 17 Challenger is a lander mission by NASA on Moon. Landed December 11, 1972. Landing site: Taurus-Littrow.

Apollo 17 was the last crewed mission to the Moon, and the only one to include a professional geologist — Harrison Schmitt. The Lunar Module Challenger landed in the Taurus-Littrow valley, chosen for its mix of highland mountains and dark valley floor. Astronauts Eugene Cernan and Schmitt conducted three EVAs totaling 22 hours, collected a record 110.52 kg of samples, and drove the LRV for 35.9 km. Schmitt discovered orange volcanic glass beads, evidence of ancient fire fountain eruptions.

  • Returned 110.52 kg of samples u2014 largest amount from any Moon mission
  • Discovery of orange volcanic glass beads (3.7 billion years old)
  • Evidence of ancient volcanic fire fountains
  • Longest total EVA time: 22 hours 4 minutes
  • Last crewed Moon landing to date
  • Longest surface stay of Apollo program
  • First (and only) geologist on the Moon (Harrison Schmitt)
  • Only nighttime Saturn V launch
