Chandrayaan-3 Vikram is a lander mission by ISRO on Moon. Landed August 23, 2023. Landing site: Near south pole.
ABOUT CHANDRAYAAN-3 VIKRAM
Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram lander made India the fourth nation to achieve a soft landing on the Moon and the first to land successfully near the lunar south pole. The landing was watched live by hundreds of millions worldwide. The Pragyan rover deployed from Vikram and traveled over 100 meters during one lunar day of operations, using its LIBS instrument to confirm the presence of sulfur in the south polar soil. The ChaSTE instrument revealed the temperature drops sharply from -10C at the surface to -60C at just 80mm depth.
KEY DISCOVERIES
- Confirmed presence of sulfur at the lunar south pole
- Temperature profile: -10C at surface to -60C at 80mm depth
- Detected aluminum, calcium, iron, chromium, titanium in south polar soil
- Recorded first seismic measurement of a probable moonquake near south pole
TECHNOLOGY & FIRSTS
- India became 4th country to soft-land on the Moon
- First successful landing near the lunar south pole
- Deployed Pragyan rover that traveled 100+ meters
- Hazard avoidance and terrain-relative navigation
