History

Site 1 at Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan is the most historically significant launch pad in spaceflight history, used for the launch of Sputnik 1 and Yuri Gagarin’s Vostok 1 flight. It continues to support Soyuz crewed launches to the ISS. The pad features the distinctive Soyuz launch infrastructure with four folding support arms known as the “tulip.”
