About Apophis

99942 Apophis is a Near-Earth asteroid that will make an extraordinarily close pass to Earth on 13 April 2029 — at 31,860 km from the surface, closer than the geostationary satellite belt. It will be visible to the naked eye as a fast-moving star over Europe, Africa and western Asia. NASA’s OSIRIS-APEX spacecraft, the repurposed OSIRIS-REx bus, will rendezvous with Apophis shortly after the flyby to study how tidal interactions with Earth reshape the asteroid. Radar observations in March 2021 have ruled out any Earth impact for at least the next century.
