H-IIB rockets are liquid-fuelled with solid-fuel strap-on boosters and are launched from the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan. Mitsubishi and JAXA have been primarily responsible for design, manufacture, and operation of H-IIB.

Kounotori 2 (HTV-2) was a H-IIB 304 mission operated by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries that lifted off from Yoshinobu Launch Complex LP-2, Tanegashima Space Center, Japan on January 22, 2011. The flight carried its payload on a resupply mission to Low Earth Orbit. It was flown as part of the International Space Station program. The launch was a success.
