The Soyuz 2.1A converted the flight control system from analog to digital, which allowed launch from fixed platforms. It also allowed big fairings and payloads. It is currently used for crewed Soyuz and Progress flights to the ISS.

Progress MS (62P) was a Soyuz 2.1a mission operated by Russian Federal Space Agency (ROSCOSMOS) that lifted off from 31/6, Baikonur Cosmodrome, Republic of Kazakhstan on December 21, 2015. The flight carried its payload on a resupply mission to Low Earth Orbit. It was flown as part of the International Space Station program. The launch was a success.
