ABOUT LUNAR RECONNAISSANCE ORBITER
The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has been mapping the Moon in extraordinary detail since 2009. It has confirmed water ice at the lunar poles, imaged every Apollo landing site, and created the most detailed topographic map of any body in the solar system. It continues to support planning for future Artemis missions.
KEY DISCOVERIES
- Confirmed water ice in permanently shadowed lunar craters
- Created detailed topographic map of entire Moon
- Detected surface changes from fresh impacts
TECHNOLOGY & FIRSTS
- Most detailed mapping of the Moon ever
- Imaged Apollo landing sites from orbit
- Has returned more data about the Moon than any other mission
