Zhurong is a mars rover by CNSA. Landed May 14, 2021. Operating at Utopia Planitia. Has traveled 1.921 km.

Zhurong (named after the Chinese god of fire) was China’s first Mars rover, part of the Tianwen-1 mission. It landed on Utopia Planitia on May 14, 2021, making China the second country to successfully operate a rover on Mars. Over 347 sols, it traveled 1,921 meters and conducted geological surveys, detecting hydrated minerals and evidence suggesting an ancient ocean once covered the landing region. Zhurong entered hibernation for the Martian winter in May 2022 and has not reestablished contact despite repeated attempts.

  • Detected hydrated minerals suggesting ancient water at Utopia Planitia
  • Evidence of ancient ocean at landing site
  • Subsurface layered structure detected by ground-penetrating radar
  • Wind-shaped features and sand dunes characterized at Utopia Planitia
  • First Chinese rover on Mars
  • Part of China's first successful Mars mission (orbit, land, and rove)
  • Active suspension system with ability to lift individual wheels
  • Self-cleaning solar panels for dust removal
