ABOUT SPACE RACE (1957-1975)

The Space Race was the Cold War competition between the Soviet Union and the United States to prove which superpower could achieve the most in spaceflight. It ran from the launch of Sputnik in 1957 to a handshake in orbit in 1975, and it drove the fastest burst of progress in the history of exploration.

Quick facts

  • Rivals: the United States and the Soviet Union.
  • Started: October 1957, when the USSR launched Sputnik 1, the first satellite.
  • Peak: July 1969, when NASA’s Apollo 11 landed the first humans on the Moon.
  • Symbolic end: July 1975, the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the first joint US-Soviet mission.

How it unfolded

The Soviets seized an early lead with a run of firsts: the first satellite, the first animal in orbit, the first human in space (Yuri Gagarin in 1961), and the first spacewalk. Stung by falling behind, the United States set itself a bold public goal in 1961, to land a man on the Moon and return him safely before the decade was out. That target focused enormous resources into the Apollo program, which succeeded with the Moon landing of July 20, 1969.

Why it mattered

The rivalry was about prestige and military power, but its legacy is technological and human. In less than two decades, humanity went from never having reached orbit to walking on another world. The race produced satellites, rockets, and electronics that still shape daily life, from global communications to weather forecasting. It also pushed both nations to invest in science and education on a vast scale. When American and Soviet crews shook hands in orbit during Apollo-Soyuz in 1975, the fiercest phase of the competition gave way to a new era of cooperation in space.
