ABOUT X-15 PROGRAM

The X-15 was a hypersonic rocket-powered research aircraft that flew 199 missions between 1959 and 1968. It reached speeds of Mach 6.7 and altitudes above 100 km, earning several pilots astronaut wings. The X-15 program generated invaluable data on hypersonic aerodynamics, heating, and control that directly informed the Space Shuttle design.
