Apollo 14 Antares is a lander mission by NASA on Moon. Landed February 5, 1971. Landing site: Fra Mauro.
ABOUT APOLLO 14 ANTARES
Apollo 14’s Lunar Module Antares landed at Fra Mauro, the site originally targeted by the aborted Apollo 13 mission. Astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell conducted two moonwalks, pulling a wheeled equipment transporter to carry tools and samples. They collected 42.28 kg of samples including breccias formed by the massive Imbrium impact event. Shepard famously hit two golf balls on the lunar surface.
KEY DISCOVERIES
- Returned 42.28 kg of lunar samples
- Collected Fra Mauro breccias from Imbrium impact event
- Deployed active seismic experiment for subsurface study
- Alan Shepard hit golf balls on the Moon
TECHNOLOGY & FIRSTS
- Landed in hilly terrain previously targeted by Apollo 13
- First use of Modular Equipment Transporter (pull cart)
- Demonstrated ability to reach difficult terrain targets
