Phoenix is a lander mission by NASA / JPL / University of Arizona on Mars. Landed May 25, 2008. Landing site: Vastitas Borealis.

Phoenix landed in the Martian arctic plains and was the first mission to directly touch and analyze Martian water ice. Using its robotic arm to dig trenches, it exposed bright white ice just a few centimeters below the surface, which visibly sublimated over several days. Its wet chemistry lab found the soil is slightly alkaline and contains perchlorates — a finding with major implications for habitability and future human exploration. Its LIDAR detected snow falling from Martian clouds, the first observation of precipitation on Mars.

  • Confirmed water ice just below the surface
  • Ice sublimated when exposed by robotic arm
  • Soil is slightly alkaline (pH 7.7) and contains perchlorates
  • Snow (water ice crystals) falling from Martian clouds detected by LIDAR
  • Soil could theoretically support some Earth organisms
  • First successful powered landing on Mars since Viking
  • Landed farther north than any previous Mars mission
  • First mission to touch and analyze Martian water ice
  • Used pulsed thrusters for powered descent (no airbags)
