Surveyor 6 is a lander mission by NASA / JPL on Moon. Landed November 10, 1967. Landing site: Sinus Medii.
ABOUT SURVEYOR 6
Surveyor 6 landed in Sinus Medii, near the center of the lunar near side. Its most notable achievement was becoming the first spacecraft to lift off from the Moon — its vernier engines were fired to hop the spacecraft 2.5 meters, allowing it to photograph the original landing site and create stereoscopic imagery. It also carried an alpha-scattering instrument for chemical analysis of the local soil.
KEY DISCOVERIES
- Chemical composition of Sinus Medii basaltic soil
- Demonstrated liftoff capability from lunar surface
- Stereoscopic surface imagery from hop experiment
