Voyager 1 is a flyby mission by NASA / JPL targeting Interstellar Space. Launched September 5, 1977. Currently 170.3278 AU from the Sun.

Voyager 1 is the most distant human-made object from Earth, currently traveling through interstellar space. Launched in 1977, it performed flybys of Jupiter and Saturn before heading toward the outer reaches of the solar system. In August 2012, it became the first spacecraft to cross the heliopause and enter interstellar space. Despite being over 160 AU from the Sun, it continues to communicate with Earth via the Deep Space Network.

  • Active volcanoes on Io (first discovered beyond Earth)
  • Detailed imagery of Jupiter and Saturn ring systems
  • Confirmed crossing of heliopause into interstellar medium
  • First human-made object to enter interstellar space (2012)
  • Most distant human-made object
  • Carries Golden Record with sounds/images of Earth
