Voyager 2 is a flyby mission by NASA / JPL targeting Interstellar Space. Launched August 20, 1977. Currently 142.6692 AU from the Sun.
ABOUT VOYAGER 2
Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have visited Uranus and Neptune, and one of only two to enter interstellar space. Launched 16 days before its twin Voyager 1, it took advantage of a rare planetary alignment occurring once every 176 years to perform the “Grand Tour” of the outer solar system. It crossed the heliopause in November 2018.
KEY DISCOVERIES
- First detailed images of Uranus and Neptune
- Discovered 11 moons of Uranus and 6 of Neptune
- Found Neptunes Great Dark Spot
- Detected magnetic fields of Uranus and Neptune
TECHNOLOGY & FIRSTS
- Only spacecraft to visit all four gas/ice giants
- Grand Tour trajectory exploiting rare planetary alignment
- Carries Golden Record
